Once you've settled on which clips survive the first-pass selection, go through each one and set in and out points before you start worrying about order or generating edit plans. Trimming and ordering pull on different instincts — one is about a single clip's internal pacing, the other is about how clips relate to each other — and mixing them tends to produce worse results in both.
What you're cutting for
Cut out dead air at the start and end of a clip: the moment before something happens, and the moment after it's clearly over. Most raw footage has several seconds of nothing on either side that exist because you pressed record slightly early and stopped slightly late. That padding does nothing for a short-form compilation and actively drags on pacing once it's stitched next to other scenes.
- Start the trim right as the action or subject becomes clear, not a beat before.
- End the trim right after the payoff of that specific moment, not after the energy has already dropped.
- Leave a small buffer rather than cutting to the exact frame — a hair too tight reads as an accidental jump cut.
- Trim out incidental audio problems (a cough, a dropped phone) even if the visual is otherwise fine.
Use the inspector, not guesswork

You'll refine trims again once you see a clip in context during ordering and preview. A first trimming pass should get every clip close, not frame-perfect — perfecting a clip that ends up cut from the final plan wastes the effort.
How trimming interacts with edit-plan length
Edit plans target a fixed total length — 60, 75 or 90 seconds — built as scenes across hook, build, escalation, peak and payoff beats. Tighter trims across your clip set give the plan generator more usable material to pull from without running long; loose, padded trims mean fewer distinct scenes fit and the plan may lean harder on your longest clips than you'd like.
Mistakes at this stage
- Trimming while also second-guessing whether the clip should be in the compilation at all — settle selection first.
- Cutting every clip to the exact same short length regardless of content, which flattens pacing instead of varying it.
- Ignoring audio while trimming purely on the visual, then noticing a jarring sound cut later in preview.
- Spending disproportionate time perfecting a marginal clip instead of moving through the whole set evenly.
