The ordering pass

After clips are trimmed, there's one job left before you generate an edit plan: deciding what plays first, what plays last, and what carries the middle.

It's tempting to skip straight from import to edit-plan generation and let the software figure out the order. Sometimes that's fine. But a five-minute ordering pass, done deliberately, catches problems that automatic sequencing can't see, because it doesn't know your story, only your footage's quality score.

What the ordering pass actually is

It's a single scroll through your imported clips in the timeline, moving each one earlier or later based on what it needs to do in the finished compilation, not on how good the clip looks in isolation. You're answering one question per clip: does this open, build, escalate, peak, or close?

Where the automatic quality score helps and where it doesn't

Each clip you import gets an automatic quality score, and ReelWorkshop uses it to suggest an order. That suggestion is a reasonable starting point — it tends to favor clips with steadier framing and clearer motion for prominent positions. But it's advisory only, and it has no idea which clip contains your best joke, your biggest reveal, or the shot your audience actually came to see. A technically mediocre clip can still be your peak moment.

Doing the pass step by step

  1. Watch every clip once at full speed

    Use the clip inspector to open each one full size. Don't judge from thumbnails — a good peak moment can look unremarkable as a still frame.

  2. Mark your intended peak first

    Before ordering anything else, decide which single clip is your peak. Everything else gets arranged around it.

  3. Build the front third toward a hook

    Move your most immediately legible, attention-grabbing clip to the front. It doesn't need to be your best clip, just your clearest one.

  4. Fill the middle with escalation, not repetition

    Avoid stacking two clips that show the same type of action back to back. Alternate angle, pace, or subject where you can.

  5. Close on payoff, not on your weakest clip by default

    The last clip should resolve something, even if it's just a reaction shot or a clean final beat.

Reordering mechanics

Reordering itself is drag and drop in the clip list, and it's non-destructive — you're changing sequence, not modifying the clips. Do this before generating edit plans, since the plan-generation step uses your current sequence as one of its inputs alongside the target length you pick. Reorder after generating a plan too, if the preview reveals a pacing problem; you don't have to start plan generation over just to swap two clips.

Common ordering mistakes

  • Front-loading every strong clip and leaving the back half to whatever's left over, which makes the ending feel like an afterthought.
  • Trusting the quality score completely and never watching the clips yourself before finalizing order.
  • Putting two clips with near-identical content next to each other, which reads as repetition rather than escalation.
  • Reordering after render instead of before — you can't reorder inside an already-exported file, only in the editor before you render.
  • Skipping the pass entirely on longer projects with 40+ clips, where automatic suggestions have the most room to miss narrative intent.

It's easier to see whether a clip's role in the sequence justifies a longer or shorter trim once you know where it sits, rather than trimming everything first and then discovering the order doesn't work.

When ordering isn't the fix

If a compilation still drags after a careful ordering pass, the problem usually isn't sequence — it's that too many mid-tier clips made the cut. No amount of reordering turns five average clips into a tight edit; go back and cut clips rather than just reshuffling them.
