Previewing your compilation before you export

Preview is free and unlimited before rendering, which makes it the cheapest place to fix a compilation. Here's how to use it well.

Importing, arranging, trimming, and previewing clips in ReelWorkshop are all free — only rendering and downloading an export draws from your monthly export minutes. That makes preview the place to catch problems, because you can watch a plan as many times as you want without any cost, then only render once you're confident in it.

What preview actually shows you

Preview plays your current edit plan live, reflecting whatever trims, reordering, and removals you've made so far. It's built to let you check pacing and structure — the hook / build / escalation / peak / payoff beats — before committing to a render, so you can catch a clip that runs too long or sits in the wrong place.

A practical preview routine

  1. Watch the plan straight through once

Don't pause or judge individual clips yet — get a feel for overall pacing first.

  2. Note where it drags

Flag any clip or moment where your attention drops. That's usually a trim candidate.

  3. Check the hook specifically

The first few seconds matter most on short-form platforms. Make sure the opening beat is genuinely your strongest, not just whatever clip landed there by default.

  4. Trim or reorder based on your notes

Make adjustments directly, then preview again rather than guessing whether the change worked.

  5. Compare against another generated plan

If you generated multiple plans, preview a second one before deciding which to export — it's still free at this stage.

  6. Export only your final choice

Once a plan previews well, move to export and choose resolution and audio settings.

Why this saves export minutes

Starter accounts get 60 exported minutes per calendar month. If you render first and only then notice a pacing problem, fixing it means burning more of that allowance on a re-render. Since preview costs nothing, doing your quality control there instead of after export is the more efficient sequence, especially if you're working through several compilations in the same month.

Preview isn't a proxy for the final render

Preview reflects your edit plan's structure and content, but the actual rendered file is produced separately by the FFmpeg-based export step. Always still glance at the exported file once it's done, particularly the first time you use a new resolution or audio setting.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Exporting immediately after generating a plan without previewing it at all.
  • Previewing once, then making several changes at once and exporting without re-checking those changes.
  • Ignoring the hook beat during preview because the middle of the reel looks fine.
  • Generating many plans but only previewing one before choosing, missing a better option.

When this isn't the right fit

Preview shows you the compilation as ReelWorkshop will structure and render it, but it won't catch issues that only show up in a specific platform's player, such as how safe zones for on-screen UI overlap your content. For that, download the export and view it in the destination app itself before publishing widely.
