Why the exported file is bigger than expected

An export's file size is mostly a function of resolution and duration, so a surprisingly large file usually means one of those two settings is higher than you actually need for where the video is going.

ReelWorkshop exports as MP4/H.264, in vertical 9:16 at either 1080x1920 or 720x1280. Between two exports of the same compilation, the biggest driver of file size difference is which of those resolutions you chose, followed by the total duration of the export.

Most likely cause: exporting at the higher resolution by default

1080x1920 carries meaningfully more data than 720x1280 for the same content and duration. If you're posting somewhere that re-compresses on upload anyway, or you're bumping up against a storage or file-size limit, the higher resolution may not be buying you visible quality on the platform you're using.

Second cause: a longer compilation than necessary

File size scales with duration. A 90-second export is going to be meaningfully larger than a 60-second one at the same resolution, so if you're not tied to the longer duration, shortening the compilation is one of the most direct ways to bring the file down.

How to fix it

  1. Re-export at 720x1280 if 1080x1920 isn't necessary

    Check what your target platform actually displays and re-compresses to before assuming you need the higher resolution.

  2. Shorten the compilation before exporting

    Cut to a tighter edit or a shorter target duration rather than exporting the longest version and hoping compression handles it.

  3. Check whether audio is adding overhead you don't need

    If you plan to mute the video anyway on the platform side, exporting muted from ReelWorkshop avoids carrying audio data you won't use.

  4. Re-check the current storage and file size guidance in the app

    Plan-level storage limits and any file size guidance can change, so confirm current numbers rather than relying on old assumptions.

Match resolution to destination, not to "maximum quality"

Exporting at the highest available resolution isn't automatically the right choice if the platform you're posting to compresses everything on upload anyway. Match your export settings to where the video is actually going.
