Making a vertical video compilation that actually fits the format

Vertical video isn't just a resolution setting. It changes what footage works, how you frame clips, and what compromises you make with mixed-orientation source material.

Vertical video, the 9:16 aspect ratio used by nearly every short-form platform, is the only output ReelWorkshop produces. That's not a limitation stated apologetically — it's the format the whole tool is built around, from beat structure to export settings. This guide covers what actually changes when your compilation has to live in a tall frame, especially when your source clips don't all start out that way.

The two export resolutions and when each fits

ReelWorkshop exports at 1080x1920 or 720x1280, both 9:16. 1080x1920 is the higher-detail option and the safer default for most platforms today; 720x1280 produces a smaller file at the same aspect ratio, which is worth choosing when you're closer to your monthly storage or export-minute limits, or when the platform you're posting to compresses heavily anyway and the extra resolution would be lost regardless.

The mixed-orientation problem

The hardest practical issue in vertical compilations isn't the export setting, it's that a lot of source footage isn't shot vertically. A landscape clip forced into a 9:16 frame either gets cropped hard on the sides, loses information you wanted in frame, or gets pillarboxed with bars — and ReelWorkshop doesn't do AI reframing or content-aware cropping, so the result reflects whatever framing decision the crop applies. The most reliable fix is upstream: film vertically in the first place when you know the footage is destined for a compilation. When that's not possible, favor landscape clips where the subject sits centered, since centered framing survives a vertical crop far better than a clip with action spread across the width of the frame.

Check crops before you commit to a plan

Inspect any landscape-shot clip in the vertical preview before finalizing an edit plan. A shot that reads fine in a thumbnail can lose its entire subject once cropped to 9:16 if the action was near the left or right edge of the original frame.

Framing decisions inside the vertical constraint

  • Favor clips with a single clear subject over wide group shots — wide shots lose the most information in a vertical crop.
  • Where a clip has to be cropped, check that on-screen text or key action isn't sitting at the very edge of the original frame.
  • Vertical video reads close-up detail well; a subject that fills more of the frame usually survives cropping and re-encoding better than a small, distant one.
  • Consider platform-typical safe zones for UI overlays (captions, like buttons) sitting over the top and bottom of the frame when your clip's key content isn't centered vertically.

How pacing and vertical format interact

Beat structure — hook, build, escalation, peak, payoff — assumes short scenes that read quickly, and vertical video's close, cropped framing supports that: viewers register a tightly framed subject faster than a wide shot with lots of visual scanning required. This is part of why vertical compilations generally favor more, shorter clips over fewer, longer ones. If your source material is mostly wide establishing shots, you may need more trimming discipline to keep each scene short enough that the vertical crop doesn't feel like it's constantly hiding information.

Exporting and what happens after

Rendering happens locally in your browser via FFmpeg (WebAssembly), producing an H.264/AAC MP4 at your chosen vertical resolution, with audio kept or muted as you choose. That MP4 downloads directly and is what you upload to whichever platform you're targeting; ReelWorkshop doesn't publish or schedule posts on your behalf.

Mistakes specific to vertical compilations

  • Importing landscape footage without checking how it crops before building a full edit plan around it.
  • Choosing 1080x1920 out of habit when you're close to a storage or export-minute limit and 720x1280 would serve just as well for a draft.
  • Using wide group shots as a hook clip, where the vertical crop obscures exactly the detail meant to grab attention.
  • Forgetting that platform UI often overlays the very top and bottom of a vertical frame, hiding content placed there.

When vertical isn't the answer

If your actual deliverable needs to be landscape or square — a YouTube long-form video, a presentation, a widescreen ad — ReelWorkshop's fixed 9:16 output isn't going to serve that project, and there's no setting to change it. In that case a general-purpose editor that supports arbitrary aspect ratios is the right tool for that specific deliverable.
