What a progress timeline actually is
Where a before-and-after compresses change into two states, a progress timeline shows three or more distinct stages across a longer period — week 1, week 4, week 8 of a build; foundation, framing, finishing of a construction project; early sketch, rough draft, final piece. The stages need to be visually distinguishable from each other, and the viewer should be able to tell roughly where in the timeline each clip sits without needing a caption to explain it.
This distinguishes it from a montage, where individual clips are interchangeable within a rhythm — in a progress timeline, order is load-bearing. Swapping two stages out of sequence breaks the format.
When to use this format
- You have footage from three or more distinct points across a project or process, not just a start and end
- Each stage looks meaningfully different from the others, so the sequence itself communicates progress
- The process took real time — weeks or months — rather than something wrapped up in a single session
- You want the pacing itself to communicate duration, not just show a result
Structure and pacing per beat
Map your stages onto the hook / build / escalation / peak / payoff structure by treating each stage as a mini-beat rather than trying to force the standard five-part shape onto arbitrary clips. The hook should be the earliest stage, since a progress timeline needs to establish the starting point before the change means anything. Build and escalation carry the middle stages in strict chronological order — this is the one format besides recap where order can't be freely rearranged for pacing. Peak and payoff both belong to the final stage: peak can be the moment progress becomes obviously visible, and payoff is the completed or current state.

Number of stages usually determines runtime more than intensity does: a 4-stage timeline fits comfortably in 60 seconds, a 6-8 stage timeline generally needs 75-90 seconds so no stage gets less than a couple of seconds. Don't compress a real 8-stage process into 45 seconds just to keep it short — the format needs enough time per stage to register as distinct.
Clip selection rules
- Pick one or two clips per stage — a progress timeline with five clips from stage one and one clip from stage four is unbalanced and reads as front-loaded
- Match framing across stages as closely as you can, the same principle as before-and-after but applied across more points in time
- Label stages for yourself during selection (even just mentally: week 1, week 4, week 8) so you don't accidentally include two clips from the same stage that you mistake for different points in time
- Use the quality score to choose between multiple candidate clips within a stage, never to decide whether a stage is represented at all
- Sort your imported clips by actual date/stage before doing anything else
- Confirm each stage has at least one usable, well-framed clip before you start trimming
- Trim each clip to the minimum needed to establish that stage clearly
- Reorder only within adjacent stages if needed for pacing — never reorder across the overall stage sequence
- Preview the full plan once before rendering to confirm the progression reads clearly start to finish
It's tempting to include four clips from the one stage that happens to have the best footage and only one from a weaker stage. Resist it — an uneven timeline undersells the stages you skimped on and can make the overall progress look sudden rather than gradual.
Export choices
Export at 1080x1920. Audio decisions should be made per stage rather than as one blanket choice: if ambient sound is reasonably consistent across your stages (same workshop, same gym), keep it; if stages were filmed in wildly different conditions, mute throughout for consistency rather than leaving jarring audio jumps between stages.
Common mistakes
- Reordering stages for pacing reasons, which breaks the chronological logic the format depends on
- Including too many clips from the strongest stage and too few from weaker ones
- Compressing too many stages into a 60-second runtime, leaving each one under a second and unreadable
- Mismatched framing between stages that makes it hard to tell what's actually changing versus what's just a different angle
