Organizing source clips before you bring them into ReelWorkshop

The compilation only gets easier to build when the raw material is organized before it ever hits the import screen. Here's a concrete system for that, and where ReelWorkshop's own tools pick up the rest.

You can import up to 100 clips into a ReelWorkshop project, and that's a lot of files to manage if they're not organized before you start. A little prep work outside the tool saves real time inside it.

Sort before you import, not after

Go through your raw footage on your device first and separate it into three rough piles: definitely worth using, maybe, and no. Delete or set aside the no pile entirely — don't import it just because it's there. ReelWorkshop's automatic quality scoring will flag weak clips once they're in, but it's still faster to not import obvious throwaways in the first place, since every import uses part of your 25 GB of storage.

Name files so you can recognize them at a glance

Once a project has 30 or 60 clips in it, thumbnails alone won't tell them apart reliably, especially for similar-looking action shots. Rename files before import using a short, consistent pattern.

  • Include the subject or moment: goal-celebration.mp4, not IMG_4821.mp4.
  • Include a rough order or timestamp if sequence matters: 01-arrival.mp4, 02-setup.mp4.
  • Keep names short enough to read fully in a file list without truncation.

Group by intended compilation

If you're planning more than one compilation from the same shoot, decide up front which clips belong to which output and keep them in separate folders on your device before import. It's much easier to import cleanly into separate projects (or separate edit-plan runs) than to import everything into one pile and try to remember later which clips were meant for what.

  1. Review raw footage and cut the obvious no pile

    Don't import footage you already know you won't use.

  2. Rename remaining files descriptively

    Short, readable names beat default camera filenames once you have dozens of clips.

  3. Split into folders by intended compilation

    One folder per planned output keeps imports focused.

  4. Check for near-duplicates yourself

    Exact duplicates get caught by ReelWorkshop's local fingerprinting, but near-duplicates — same moment, slightly different angle — won't be, so pick your favorite before import.

  5. Import the finalized folder

    Drag and drop or use the file picker for up to 100 clips at once.

What ReelWorkshop still does for you after import

Once imported, exact duplicate clips are fingerprinted locally and flagged or excluded automatically, and every clip gets a quality score used for ordering suggestions. This is a backstop, not a substitute for your own review — the fingerprinting only catches exact duplicates, not two similar-but-different takes of the same shot.

Near-duplicates slip through

If you shot the same moment on two takes, ReelWorkshop's duplicate detection won't catch that they're near-identical unless the files are byte-for-byte the same — pick the better take yourself before importing both.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Importing everything from a camera roll and sorting later inside the tool, which wastes storage and makes arrangement slower.
  • Leaving default camera filenames, making it hard to find a specific clip once you're reordering.
  • Mixing clips meant for two different compilations into one import and losing track of which is which.
  • Assuming duplicate detection will catch near-duplicate takes — it only flags exact matches.

When this isn't the right tool

If you need a full asset-management system with tags, metadata search, and version history across hundreds of projects, that's beyond what ReelWorkshop's per-project storage is meant to do — a dedicated media library tool fits that better.
