Building a multi-angle edit from event footage shot on several cameras

Multiple cameras at one event means multiple versions of the same moments and gaps where nobody was filming. This is how to turn that pile into one coherent edit without a multicam syncing tool.

What this format is and when to use it

A multi-angle event edit compiles footage gathered from several cameras or phones covering the same event — a wedding, a game, a recital, a party — into one compilation that draws its best moments from whichever angle captured them best, rather than relying on a single camera's footage start to finish. Use it whenever you had more than one person filming, since a single-camera edit almost always misses moments the other angle caught cleanly.

ReelWorkshop doesn't do true multicam editing — there's no synchronized multi-track timeline showing several angles of the same moment at once for you to switch between. Instead, you're selecting the single best clip of each moment from whichever source has it, then sequencing those choices like any other compilation. Plan for this as a selection problem, not a syncing problem.

Gathering and organizing footage from multiple sources

  1. Collect everything into one place first

    Get all footage off every phone and camera before you start importing, so you're choosing from the full pool rather than discovering a better angle after you've already built an order.

  2. Name files by source before import

    Rename or note which device each clip came from — "phone1_ceremony_01" style naming — so you can tell at a glance which angle you're looking at once everything is inside one project.

  3. Import up to 100 clips into the project

    If the event produced more footage than that across all sources, do a first-pass cull on each device before import rather than trying to bring in everything.

  4. Watch for duplicate uploads across devices

    If the same clip got shared or AirDropped between phones, exact-duplicate fingerprinting will flag identical files automatically, but a near-identical shot filmed on two cameras at once will not be caught — you have to spot and choose between those yourself.

Choosing the best angle per moment

For each moment that multiple cameras captured, pick one clip only — don't include both angles of the same moment back to back, since that reads as a mistake rather than a stylistic choice in a compilation tool without true multicam switching. Judge angles on: who's in frame and how centered, whether the moment is in focus, audio quality if it matters for that moment, and how steady the shot is. The automatic quality score is a genuinely useful shortcut here since it's evaluating exactly these technical factors across every candidate clip.

Generate edit plans at 75 or 90 seconds for events with real duration and variety; 60 seconds tends to force you into a single-angle-feeling edit even with multiple sources available. Preview at least two generated plans, since with a large mixed-source clip pool the suggested order is more likely to group clips oddly by import order rather than event chronology.

Don't chase perfect sync

Because there's no synchronized multi-track view, don't try to line up exact frame-matched moments from two cameras — pick the one clip that tells the moment best and move on. Chasing frame-accurate sync in a tool built for sequential compilation wastes time the format doesn't reward.

Clip trimming and consistency

Trim each selected clip to the moment itself regardless of source, and be aware that footage from different cameras may differ in exposure, color, and stabilization — ReelWorkshop has no color grading, so those differences will be visible cut to cut. Where two angles are close in quality, favor the one that visually matches its neighbors in the sequence better, since a jarring color or exposure jump between cuts is more noticeable in a multi-source edit than in single-camera footage.

Export settings

Export at 1080x1920, checking the current resolution options in the app, since mixed-source footage often has some clips that are already lower quality — matching the export to your best sources rather than downgrading everything to match your worst. Keep source audio where it's usable per clip; if audio quality varies wildly between devices, consider muting the whole compilation for consistency rather than having volume and clarity jump between every cut.

  • Ignoring visible exposure or color mismatches between sources when sequencing adjacent clips
  • Relying entirely on the automatic quality score without checking that the chosen angle actually shows what matters (the right person, the right action)
  • Trying to preserve exact chronological order across sources when a moment-driven order would read better

When this isn't the right tool

If you need a true synchronized multicam timeline — switching between angles of the exact same moment, split-screen comparisons, or frame-accurate audio sync across cameras — ReelWorkshop's sequential compilation model won't do that.
